Onze visie

 Geschiedenis

Sedalia1861
1919 Dandy’s early research delved into the intricate workings of cerebral ventricles and cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. His work expanded our knowledge of neuroanatomy, unlocking the secrets of how the brain functions. Then, in 1919, he introduced a game-changing procedure called pneumoencephalography. This innovation allowed doctors to diagnose neurological conditions by injecting air into the brain and visualizing its structures through X-rays, revolutionizing the field.

1886

Born on April 6, 1886, in Sedalia, Missouri, Walter Edward Dandy embarked on a pioneering journey in the field of medicine.

His path led him to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1910, setting the stage for a remarkable career dedicated to advancing our understanding of the brain.

However, Dandy’s most enduring legacy was his impact on neurosurgery. Armed with an in-depth understanding of neuroanatomy and innovative surgical techniques, he achieved remarkable success in treating brain tumors and hydrocephalus. His contributions reshaped the landscape of neurosurgery, offering newfound hope to countless patients.

1931

In 1931, Dandy, along with his peers, co-founded the Harvey Cushing Society. This society was established to advance the field of neurosurgery through research and education, carrying forward the torch of progress in the discipline.

2011

Fast forward to November 19, 2011, and another chapter unfolds. The Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society was established in St. Louis, Missouri, a global representation of neurosurgeons dedicated to operative neurosurgery. This choice of name pays homage to Dandy’s pioneering work in the field.

The core mission of the Walter E. Dandy Neurosurgical Society is clear: to provide a platform for neurosurgeons worldwide to collaborate. Together, they aim to enrich the education of both neurosurgical residents and experienced neurosurgeons, with a particular focus on teaching neurosurgical anatomy, operative techniques, and the development and dissemination of evidence-based clinical guidelines. Their collective goal is to enhance clinical decision-making in the ever-evolving field of neurosurgery, incorporating the latest scientific advancements.

Professor Saleem Abdulrauf, a distinguished figure in the field of neurosurgery, serves as Chairman of the society. His leadership adds strength to the society’s efforts, ensuring that Walter E. Dandy’s legacy continues to thrive as a bridge between the past and the future. Under Professor Abdulrauf’s guidance, the society remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and striving to improve the lives of those in need through the practice of medicine.

2022

To spread this knowledge to students worldwide, the society decided to establish and form clubs in various countries around the world. Each Dandy Neurosurgical Club has a student board responsible for organizing various activities for students interested in the field of neurosurgery. The first board of Dandy Netherlands was formed in January 2022, under the mentorship of prof. Saleem Abdulrauf. Since then, we have organized several projects aimed at educating and connecting students interested in neurosurgery.
